Enclosure No. 4 to China Letter No. 478 dated 13th April 1930.
INDO-CHINA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY LIMITED,
Jardine, Katheson & Co.Ltd.,
General Managers.
HONGLONG, 29th March, 1930.
sir,
We are in receipt of your No. H.K.0260 of the
28th instant detailing the conditions under which Wilitary
Guards will be continued until Indian Guards are efficient
and, as we wrote on the 25th idem, the Government has left
us no option but to accept these onerous teras.
We view with considerable apprehension the
responsibility forced upon us for any disability incurred
while officers or men are "lent" to us, and we shall be glad
if you will please let us know to what extent the following
extreme cases might involve us:
(a) The death of a Major who has a wife and two
children.
(b) The death of a Private who has a wife and
two children.
We mention (a) because we have known of an
instance where an officer of that seniority had charge of
a Guard.
Te would also like to know the full meaning of
the term "any disability" and under what circumstances it
will apply. We have in mind the unfortunate case where a
Private of a Guard accidentally killed himself while
handling his own rifle. Would we have to meet gratuities
or pensions arising out of such accidents, or is it only
intended to apply Paragraph 4 of your letter in the event
of Piratical attacks.
